Battambang Province

Explore Battambang, Cambodia

Battambang (Khmer: ក្រុងបាត់ដំបង; Batdâmbâng) is the capital of Battambang Province in northwestern Cambodia. Known as the heart of Cambodia’s rice country, the city combines natural beauty, historical landmarks, and cultural richness. With its colonial architecture, Buddhist temples, and vibrant countryside, Battambang is a must-visit destination for travelers seeking authentic Cambodian experiences.

History

Founded in the 11th century by the Khmer Empire, Battambang became Cambodia’s leading rice-producing region and a key commercial hub. In the late 18th century, Siam annexed the area. It remained under Siamese rule through the Aphaiwong family, a branch of the Khmer royal family. This continued until 1907, when the French reclaimed it.

Under French colonial rule, Battambang underwent modernization, introducing grid-style streets, urban structures, bridges, and public buildings. The railway linking Battambang to Phnom Penh was constructed, and large villas and cultural facilities were built. Later, under Prince Sihanouk, the city saw further modernization, including factories, an airport, schools, a university, and cultural centers.

Culture & Lifestyle

Battambang maintains its bucolic charm with well-preserved French colonial architecture alongside traditional Khmer houses. The Sangkae River flows gracefully through the city, offering scenic views. The surrounding countryside is dotted with rice fields, orchards, and small villages. In these areas, local life continues much as it has for centuries.

The city is a cultural hub with:

  • Buddhist temples (Wats) over 300 years old
  • Traditional handicrafts and markets
  • Local rice wine production and culinary traditions
  • Ethnic communities including Khmer, Cham, Vietnamese, Thai, and Chinese
