Wat Ek Phnom – Ancient Angkorian Temple
Wat Ek Phnom is a remarkable Angkorian temple complex. It is located on the left bank of the Sangkae River. It is about 13 kilometers north of Battambang city near G Peam Aek. It was built in 1027 AD under the reign of King Suryavarman I. Originally, it was a Hindu temple dedicated to the gods.
Although Wat Ek Phnom is partly collapsed and looted over the centuries, it remains famous for its intricately carved lintels. These features showcase the artistry of Angkorian builders.
What to See
- The Ancient Temple Ruins
The temple measures 52m by 49m. It is built of sandstone blocks. The temple is enclosed by remnants of an outer wall and baray (ancient reservoir). Several smaller prasat (shrines) stand on the platform, with only the main towers still intact. Their upper flanks show fine bas-reliefs, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of the 11th century. - The Modern Pagoda
In front of the ancient ruins stands the Ek Phnom Pagoda, a modern Buddhist temple. It is surrounded by 18 sacred Buddha trees, giving the site a serene spiritual atmosphere. - The Giant Buddha Statue
A towering white-stone seated Buddha marks the entrance. It has become an iconic symbol of Ek Phnom, blending the site’s ancient Hindu roots with modern-day Buddhist devotion.
Cultural Significance
Wat Ek Phnom is not just an archaeological site—it is also a living religious and cultural landmark. The temple grounds are a popular picnic and pilgrimage destination for locals, especially during Khmer celebrations and religious festivals.
